The Best Lightweight Organic Moisturizers for Summer

As I started to write this post, I saw this news story about chemical sunscreens' harmful effect on aquatic life. What this means for you: Look for sunscreen and SPF moisturizers with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide!

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxoide are physical, as opposed to chemical, sunscreens and are gentler on skinand, apparently, the planet. Even better: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide offer both UVA and UVB protection.

After researching lightweight natural moisturizers with sunscreen, I've come to my top two: Kimberly Sayer Ultra Light Facial Moisturizer SPF 25 and Juice Beauty Green Apple Moisturizer SPF 15.

Kimberly Sayer Ultra Light Facial Moisturizer SPF 25 ($32) goes on so smoothly and sinks right in.  It contains glycerin and shea butter—which beautifully moisturize without clogging your pores—plus antioxidant vitamins A, C and E and soothing aloe.

Juice Beauty Green Apple Moisturizer SPF 15 ($38) has an uplifting, citrus aroma that's perfect for summerit contains organic lemon juice to lightly exfoliate and brighten. (After a few weeks, your skin will glow like Cate Blanchett's.) Its nutrient-rich lineup includes organic aloe and green tea extract plus rosehip seed, evening primrose and jojoba oils. Despite the plant oils, this also quickly absorbs and leaves no white cast.

My problem is finding a natural moisturizer with SPF that is oil-free. Help?

Hi! Thank you for your question. Both of these moisturizers are non-comedogenic, meaning they won't clog pores and cause breakouts. In fact, the AHAs in the apple and lemon juice in the Juice Beauty moisturizer will exfoliate the skin to prevent pores from becoming clogged.

Sadly, non-comedogenic doesn't cut it for my skin. I've learnd the hard way that I need oil-free.

Thanks for the recommendations -- I'm on the same hunt. I read somewhere that lemon oil might actually make someone more photosensitive! (which would obviously be counter-productive). :-( Have you heard of that?

To kblang - No, I haven't heard that lemon oil can cause photosensitivity. But lemon juice can because it contains natural alpha hydroxy acids, which, because they exfoliate the top layer of skin, require sun protection.

one of the few i've found is boscia's oil-free spf 15 moisturizer. has anyone tried it? maybe ecopretty could review it?

Thanks Lindsay, I might give this a try -- but first I have use up my Devita, which right now I'm digging. Thanks for the great blog!

I am looking for the same thing - my skin can handle the natural oils in winter but not summer. I just ordered 100% Organic Pomegranate Antioxidant
Hydration SPF 20. It does have pomegranate oil but from what I understand it is much lighter than most natural oils. It'll be a few months before I know if I like it since it doesn't look like summer's coming anytime soon in NYC :)

actually, juice beauty is not non-comedogenic as it contains algae extract (rated high on the comedogenicity scale). that is why i stopped using it.
