Fair Trade EveryDay Shea Body Lotion

At Whole Foods recently, my eye landed on EveryDay Shea Body Lotion. Weighing in at a mighty 32 fluid ounces, it’s hard to miss. I assumed its diminutive price tag (just $14.95) would mean lower-quality ingredients. But I pleasantly discovered a very pure product made with unrefined shea butter—the best!—from West Africa.

Pretty Factor: You haven't used shea butter until you've used unrefined shea butter—the only kind that contains the oil's full healing and moisturizing properties. (Most have been bleached, refined and, worst, deodorized!) Raw shea butter's rich, nutty fragrance combined with real vanilla extract make this lotion sensually aromatic. Antioxidants in lemongrass, shea leaf and red palm oil further protect the skin.

Eco Factor: No parabens, synthetic fragrances or animal testing. EveryDay Shea is an extension of Alaffia Skincare, a fair trade company that gives 10% of its sales to community projects in West Africa aimed at reducing poverty and empowering women in poor communities. I have never been happier with a purchase and would have gladly spent twice as much to help this great cause.

To buy: $14.95 at Whole Foods and everydayshea.com. Considering my usual body moisturizer costs twice as much for only five ounces, this is a bargain. It may last all year!

Stocking Stuffer Idea: Lavanila Healthy Body Washes and Butters

, It's been a rough winter so far.  Job lay-offs from the recession combined with below freezing temps and inches of snow make me thankful that people haven't started "shaving their heads, climbing tall buildings and shooting people," as Anthony Bourdain would say.

Here in Chicago, a minor struggle has been battling dry, rough skin all over.  Radiator heat plus a sulfate-containing shower gel that I was using (got it for free) were the culprits.  Then I bought a humidifier and received a Lavanila Healthy Body Wash and Body Butter.

Pretty factor:
Lavanila ("vanilla" in Madagascar) is like a more natural Jo Malone; the scents are as crisp and clean—but derived naturally from vanilla, grapefruit, lemon peel, and cedarwood essential oils.  The soap- and sulfate-free washes clean skin without drying, then contain antioxidant-rich goji berry and pomegranate, nourishing oat protein, and purifying willow bark extract.  Available in 4 fresh scents.

Eco factor: The butters and washes contain organic botanical extracts and no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, propylene glycol, silicones, or synthetic dyes

To buy: $20 at lavanila.com and sephora.com

Morrocan Rose: Scent of the Moment

The soothing scent and conjurations of Mediterranean warmth and exotic lushness have made of Moroccan Rose essential oil a star ingredient in high-end body care products the past couple years. Two best-sellers are Ren's Moroccan Rose Otto body care line and Redflower's Moroccan Rose line.

Pretty factor:
The Ren wash—an InStyle Best Beauty Buys winner for five consecutive years—contains Rose Otto Oil, whose gorgeous scent melts away worries and sadness. Additionally, geranium essential oil balances oil production and uplifts the mood, and panthenol (vitamin B5) conditions the skin. The Red Flower wash is also abloom with soothing and moisturizing ingredients. Honey, aloe, and evening primrose oil are a few.

Eco factor: Neither Ren nor Red Flower products contain petrochemicals, parabens, sulfates, propylene glycol, synthetic dyes or fragrance. No animal testing. Ren donates 2.5% of its profits to environmental organizations.

To buy:
Ren: $27 each at Sephora stores and sephora.com; Redflower: $20 each at beauty.com.
